DDS is pleased to announce our guest instructor for the Scottish Longsword Adavancement Program: Maciej Talaga!
This June, the S.L.A.P. comes to Edinburgh for a weekend of sparring, socialising and coaching from one of the world’s best.
Fencer, Wrestler, Historian, Coach

Maciej Talaga has been playing with swords since 2004, instructing since 2009, publishing since 2010 and wrestling since 2017.
Maciej authors the Sprechfenster Blog, and is one of the foremost authorities on MS3227a, the Nuremberg Codex, that contains some of the most interesting material in the tradition of Liechtenauer.
Maciej will be teaching a workshop on the use of the longsword according to the Codex, from how to apply the footwork it describes, to the hanging and winding.
Saturday Workshop : Footwork and Descision-Making
This workshop will explore the system of footwork in the Nuremberg Codex, and how to make descisions within the tactical framework it describes.
Suitable for all skill levels.
Minimum gear: weapon simulator
Recommended gear: weapon simulator and protective gear allowing for committed thrusting
Sunday Workshop : Left-foot-forward Preparations and Parries (Abwenden)
Johannes Liechtenauer advises us to set the left foot forward, advice that can be hard to follow! The first part of Sunday’s workshop will look at ways of preparing with a step of our left foot.
The second part will focus on the turning and turning-off, which Maciej sees as a a key part of the Codex that is often overlooked.
Suitable for intermediate practitioners and above
Minimum gear: weapon simulator and mask
Recommended gear: full sparring gear

The HEMA Shop
“The Knight (HEMA) Shop is one of Europe’s largest retailers and wholesalers of replica militaria and associated giftware. As the UK’s market leaders their impressive portfolio boasts a 1,000 sq. ft. Shop opposite the World Heritage Conwy Castle, a 12,000 sq. ft. showroom and distribution Centre.”

Sparring Glove
“The Sparring Gloves are almost entirely handmade and created as a result of thorough analysis of all kinds of possible fighting injuries based on many years of sparring experience. Thus the gloves may serve as perfect protection against wounds likely suffered in the historical fencing art. Sparring Gloves absorb the energy of any hard blow as well as ensure perfect mobility of wrists and fingers required in accomplishing fighting techniques.”

SPES
“Before we’ve entered the path leading to HEMA, we’ve been a part of historical reenactment for years. Our team took part in numerous knight tournaments, including buhurt. That’s when we learned about the importantce of proper durability of the equipment. We were wondering how to combine the best durability with hight level of mobility. So, we’ve started to manufacture our own arming garments and steel parts of armor, and later even civil clothing. First for our own needs, but later also for others.
First HEMA gear was designed by us in 2007 for Fechtschule Gdańsk, with Andrzej Zmuda Trzebiatowski and Jan Chodkiewicz. From that time such groups and HEMA teachers are our consultants in creating dedicated clothing and overlays. In the course of time we have extended our activity with products for training based on treaties. Then, in 2010, SPES Historical Fencing Gear came to existance.
The lengthy experience made us a leader in the the most durable and comfortable HEMA gear in the world. Even today we are regularly being mentioned in HEMA gear ranks. To share our passion, we try to support HEMA events and non-profit organizations all over the world. Together, we want to popularize knowledge and abilities connected with HEMA.”
